MASTERCARD CONTINUES TO SET THE BAR HIGH IN A CATEGORY THAT INCREASINGLY FEATURES SMART USE OF DATA.

The ideas in this category are not so much “campaigns” as innovative business ideas that actively help people, led by Mastercard with two entries in the top five. There were also two projects that empowered women in countries where financial inclusion is not a given: Mexico and India. It’s also worth noting that “data” – once a word that inspired privacy fears – is being deployed here for good causes. The witty “Last Performance” from Partners Life is something of an outlier, in that it uses traditional TV in an unexpected way.

Story The campaign focused on SDG goal eight, 'Decent Work and Economic Growth'.
 
Problem Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, almost 10 million refugees from the occupied territories crossed the Polish border. Many found shelter in major Polish cities that were already overcrowded, causing rental hikes and increased competition for jobs - all amidst an unprecedented rise in inflation.
Result Knowing that smaller towns afford more opportunities, Mastercard introduced the 'Where to Settle' digital platform, a comprehensive digital tool that aggregates job and real estate data, anonymous Mastercard spending insights, as well as data from the Polish Central Statistical Office.
Of the 1.5 million refugees who have settled in Poland thus far, 20% have used the platform to find Polish cities outside of the major metropolitan areas to make a fresh start. The tool upholds Mastercard’s 'Data for Good' commitment to leverage data responsibly in the service of society.

Story The vast majority of women in Mexico (83%) have no credit history, which prevents opportunities to start businesses or gain financial independence through loan applications. The women don’t have traditional credit cards or other records, but they do participate in loans through local shops. Created with DDB Mexico, the spot looks at an initiative by WeCapital. The investment firm launched Data Tienda, a financial information center that has collected credit information for millions of Mexican women through the accounts of local shopkeepers. The initiative has led to 23% of women receiving microcredits from banks in Mexico.

Story The core idea and mission of the Mastercard Touch Card campaign is reflected in our tagline, “A world designed for all of us, is Priceless.”Not only did the Touch Card introduce a new standard for financial inclusion, our 360° campaign reinvented the way we use a wide range of advertising media to reach our demographic on their terms. Our goal was to get the Touch Card into the hands of those who need it most – and to show the world what was possible when designing a campaign for the partially sighted and blind.The innovative solutions we developed are applicable far beyond the Touch Card campaign – and designed to make all future communications, retail experiences and environments more accessible for low vision people everywhere.Every part of our campaign was vetted extensively and endorsed by The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and accessible design leader, IDEMIA.

To connect with skeptical and savvy gamers, BMO launched a first-of-its-kind communications platform on the world's number one streaming platform: Twitch. With content that intersected both gaming culture and personal finances, and answering questions and sharing tips on topics like monetizing gaming, homeownership, and budgeting, BMO's NXT LVL helped gamers level up in gaming and finances.By launching a first-of-its-kind communication platform on Twitch, with content that intersects gaming culture and personal finances, BMO changed the gaming community's opinion of what a bank can be and reimagined where and how consumers engage with a bank. All this despite the objections of Twitch, who recommended against a bank creating a Twitch channel.

Story During the world wars, Canadian soldiers overseas sent millions of letters home to Canada. We created replicas of actual letters, sourced from the Canadian Letters & Images Project at Vancouver Island University, the largest online archive in the country. These letters were re-sent to their original destinations – to be experienced by the homes’ current residents today. This gave Canadians a unique and insightful window into the past, bringing the human experience of war to life.Despite a limited media budget, the campaign generated over 23.4 million media impressions, including Toronto Sun, Bloomberg, MSN and more. CBC Radio even aired an extended five-minute segment featuring the letters. Most importantly, HomeEquity Bank helped raise over $189,029 in individual donations for veterans and their families.

Story Let’s confront people with the effects of climate change in an unusual way – citing an attention-grabbing topic: Money. We created a super attractive but massively unscrupulous offer. A business model out of the disaster: “THE RISE”, the first real estate company to help you profit from rising sea levels.The goal: a cynical offer that looked so authentic that people couldn’t help but share and talk about it. To achieve this, we perfected “THE RISE'' offline and online: from a legit-looking LinkedIn profile of the startup’s CEO and website listing future beachside property plots to billboards placed in regions projected to become coastland according to Climate Central, etc. To orchestrate the outcry, we fed daily content and ads to strategically chosen opinion leaders on social media. Our second goal was to start a discussion around private investments and show people that they can make profits and help the environment.
